Worship in Divine Service
The Divine Service
We worship in Word and Sacrament. This is what the church has always done. Acts 2:42 says, “And they devoted themselves to the apostles' teaching and the fellowship, to the breaking of bread and the prayers.” We gather regularly for the worship of our Lord Jesus Christ, not because He needs our service, but because we need Him. What else did the apostles teach than the Lord’s Word? What bread did they break other than the bread broken in the giving of the Lord’s Supper? The Divine Service is where the Lord’s Word and the Lord’s Supper are at the center of our life together. This was the apostle’s teaching. This was the breaking of bread. Christ ministers to us in the Divine Service, calling us to repentance for sin and bestowing upon us His gift of forgiveness. By His forgiveness, we learn to live in the freedom of His salvation and the joy of loving service to one another. In this, we have fellowship with each other. In this, the prayers of the church rise up like incense (Psalm 141:2). All of this is coupled with many opportunities for learning, devotion, and prayer within our beloved congregation.
